When you pray, do you pause to meditate? Meditation is a powerful way to connect with God on your path to Spiritual Wellness.

I recently led a group of women in guided meditation. We focused on being refreshed by the Holy Spirit.  I told them to close their eyes and imagine Father God. In meditation, they asked the Father to give them His Holy Spirit. At this point, several women began to cry or smile. They each experienced a unique, individualized moment with the Holy Spirit.

After we closed in gratitude, one woman came to me in tears. She was so moved by the meditation that she could hardly speak. She explained how she felt distant from the Holy Spirit. She heard others talk about their relationship with God and the intimacy of this connection. But, she simply could not experience this for herself.

During the meditation time, she felt God’s Holy Spirit for the first time. She felt His comfort and compassion. She knew His love for her. This was her first time meditating, and it changed her life.

Spiritual Wellness and Meditation

We must bring balance to our hectic, fast-paced lives. God does not want us to rush through our time with Him. He wants to sit peaceful and silent, to transcend the hustle-bustle of our lives. He wants to transform us from the inside-out.

I remember the first time I was introduced to meditation. I was sleeping over at a friend’s house, and her mom had a friend visiting . . . a nun. The nun led us in a simple meditation. This was the first time I felt present with Jesus. The experienced impacted me forever.

If this is your first time meditating, I leave you with this simple meditation. The same meditation led by the nun in my childhood:

1. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and imagine your heart.

2. After a few moments, ask Jesus to visit with you in your heart.

3. Now, let the meditation continue for a few moments longer.

I began meditation as a teenager, so we are talking the ’60′s, flower power, lotus position in a darkened room in front of a single candle. I would try not to consciously think of anything. Then a calmness would settle into me, my breathing was slowed and in time I would return slowly to the evening but soooo relaxed and feeling a sense of peace.

Skipping fwd to taking a degree in gerontology and one session was with a therapist who had us lay on mats, eyes closed and imagine a beautiful place we’d like to be (That is laying on a beach towel with the sun on my face, listening to the crash and ripples of the waves in and back out, in and back out). Our breaths were counted and I was told my breaths reduced to 3 per minute!

I did meditate one time and experienced what is termed an “out of body experience” sensing (seeing yourself down there on the bed) then one suddenly is back on the bed. I found it awesome.

I now meditate similar to your teaching, with deep breaths, eyes closed and then pray that God (Jesus) will sit with me. It is wonderful and the sense of HIM there with me is incredibly inspiring yet soothing as a balm to my soul, if that makes sense.

Thanks for sharing your teachings and I do believe meditation works wonders. Each person must, I think know why and what they want to meditate toward…calmness, closer sense of God or just to try it out and see what happens for them.

Clearly, my ways have changed and my reasons have changed to where it is now for my spiritual wellbeing and closeness to HIM in my heart, as you suggested.

I never used those words of ‘inviting Jesus into my heart’ but I will try that as it sounds to be a beautiful thing to do and for me the heart is the center of all beings!

    Jan-Michael
