Enough Space in the World for the Real You?
Posted on 04. Apr, 2011 by Angie Wyatt in Blog
I used to wonder if there was enough room in the world for me to live as my true self. I thought my dreams were too big and my personality was too overbearing. It seemed that everyone else was already doing the things I wanted to do – like writing, TV shows and speaking. And, in many cases, I thought others were even doing it better than I could. By comparing myself to others, I was limiting the possibilities for my life. I wasn’t living as the person I was destined to be.
My friend Erin Austin of the band OK Sweetheart has a beautiful outlook on life. Last year, we were talking about her dreams for the band. At the time she was living in San Francisco and planning to move to Brooklyn. She said that she wanted to make the move because there were lots of pop bands in Brooklyn. She said it was a great community.
I felt confused. Why would she take her talents to a place that was saturated with her similar vibe? Didn’t she think she would get lost in the crowd? So, I asked her about this and she answered with humility.
She said, “There’s plenty of space in the world for me and my music.”
It was the sort of response that can only come from someone who is comfortable in her own skin. She sees other artists as inspiration and not competition.
When we compare ourselves to others, we limit our future. We think that everyone else has already arrived, or someone else is doing a better job than us. We begin to feel unworthy, insignificant and incapable. We are defeated even before we try.
The truth is that we are quite capable of pursuing our destiny. As we learn to hear God, He strengthens us from within. He gives us the courage and ability to pursue our dreams. Your dream is not better or worse than someone else. It’s your dream. It’s part of your destiny. As you pursue your dreams, you grow into the person you are destined to be. You are living as your true self.
There is plenty of space in the world for the real you!
How are you showing up in the world as your true self?

Hi Angie,
I’m so grateful that I found your blog by coincidence a while ago. I found your words are very powerful and encouraging. As a Christian I learn a lot on your blog how to be a Godly person (you know sometimes we can easily lose our tracks as there are too many influences flying around on this earth).
There are lots of dreams / goals that I’d like to achieve, would you be able to share something about how to stick with one thing at a time, how to choose one of our many dreams and go for it with full gear?
Thanks alot Angie

Yes Angie, showing our true colours can be difficult but I do find, firstly to show ourselves for who we are requires not just showing-up in person whenever possible but being well-grounded and open with our thoughts and plans when we do speak-up after showing-up!
Also being ready to listen to others’ experiences, plans and opinions is essential. Listening first for me is best so I can relate to where that person is coming from!
Apart from being active in my residential community, there are great ways to help or find help on-line! My favourite is http://www.Akoha.com which is about sharing positive stories of everyday life! Also, the sponsors have commited to building libraries and filling them with books in needy communities around the world. It all originated when some students read the story of a person who came back from Nepal and, having been amazed the children had just one book, he raised the funds and returned, built a library and filled it. That was back around 1950 I believe.
So the students got a grant to start Akoha and I was one of those invited to help kick-start it. Wonderful stories, very secure and now I follow along but have taken a back-seat to the youth who are really doing amazing stuff and connecting positively!
HIS blessing to all…I was Blessed to get invited and the last 3 years with Akoha have been a great experience!
