Conan Challenges Cynicism
Posted on 06. Apr, 2010 by Angie Wyatt in Blog
Did you catch Conan O’Brian’s farewell on the Tonight Show? I have a new found respect for the man. Despite his incredible disappointment over losing the show, his attitude was remarkably gracious. In his last moments with NBC, Conan O’Brian used his comedic platform to positively influence his audience. To young people disheartened by his treatment at NBC, Conan made this statement:
Please do not be cynical… I hate cynicism… It’s my least favorite quality… nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work hard and you are kind, amazing things will happen.
In the face of his own disappointment, he warns others to not become cynical! Clearly, he was committed to a good attitude despite his feelings and circumstances. Everyday, we commit our time and energy to our faith, marriages, career and education. But, what attitude will we have when these disappoint us?
Spiritual Wellness & Cynicism
Perhaps it’s time for an attitude commitment? As we pursue Spiritual Wellness, we too must commit ourselves to a positive attitude when faced with disappointment. Our faith begins and ends with God. Even the people we most admire will fall short of our expectations. They will disappoint us.
Big ministries, like big corporations, often make decisions that hurt people in pursuit of their own agenda and profit. When this happens, faith-filled people risk becoming cynics of faith and even God. In the book Boundaries, Cloud & Townsend explain, “We do not get everything we want, and we all must grieve over disappointments instead of punish others for them.”
I must be responsible for my own disappointment when my desires are not met. Blaming others for my unmet desires will only make me a cynic. A cynic has lost her faith. She’s lost her faith because she has placed her hope and expectations in people and their decisions. She must place her hope in God.
How have you maintained a positive attitude when faced with disappointment? Tell us your story.

Being disappointed has many faces. Disappointed from somebody else or a situation. If somebody else is disappointing us, I think we can’t just smile in our body. We can ask this person why you disappointed me. With a good or negative answer we must live and no answer means negative. When we are disappointed about a situation we have to deal with ourselfs and making the best out of it and we can pray about. -Cynicism is no good it poisons our environment. It has a negative touch and if it has a positive others can misunderstand us and be disappointed. I hope I answered clear/good enough to your subject. . – No, haven’t seen Conan. – Blessings Rose

Angie,
As always, excellent post. This is such a great reminder.
“Big ministries, like big corporations, often make decisions that hurt people in pursuit of their own agenda and profit. When this happens, faith-filled people risk becoming cynics of faith and even God.”
This is so true. We have to remember that for the most part we are disposeable without thought when it comes to money driven companies, friends, or whatever it may be. I worked for a company for almost 20 years, and they laid me off without one concern or thought about me or my welfare. Praise God, I knew who my provider is. He provided a better job.
I too was glad to hear the positive attitude of someone who is so publically know and followed. It is refreshing to hear from someone who is famous.
Thank you for the post and the reminder.

Angie,
great blog!
I always liked Conan and Jay Leno. Interesting on the buy out clauses…but that is what happens in big business. I thought he was very thankful & sincere– but was wondering if he would sit down with Jay Leno for dinner…lol
People have changed a lot in this type of cynical attitude, the youth really have picked up on it too…they changed. And we allowed it to turn…out that way.
Walking in faith, and praticing our faith in our lives helps our attitude. Sometimes, God will test faith…in a lot of ways. Being good in humor helps…
Where is jay…Lol
Too much in big business…will create double standards, but maybe things work out in the end for the both of them…
Insightful blogs…
Thanks-Angie!

I have virtually always found that disappointments are eventually “a blessing in diguise”. It can often be more than disappointment and shattering. However the harshness I have found always, never such that I would have forgone the initial situation or relationship that has since caused pain.
Conan has put it so much better and I applaud his final message!!!
God has or will open new opportunities if we are filled with Love and concentrate on all the positives of any situation, regardless how short were those good times.
He is always here for us and opening new doors

Positive attitudes are never wrong. But we are just human-beings and sometimes we have enough of what’s going on around the world and we are risked to have a bad attitude. – Blessings, Rose
